Lake Manyara National Park

Despite its relatively small size, Lake Manyara National Park is home to more than 390 bird species. The park’s diverse habitats, including groundwater forests, woodlands, and the alkaline lake itself, attract a variety of birds

Notably, large flocks of flamingos can be observed feeding along the lake’s edge during the wet season. Other species include pelicans, storks, herons, and numerous birds of prey.

Serengeti National Park

Famous for the Great Migration, the Serengeti also offers rich birdlife with over 500 species recorded. The park’s varied ecosystems support species such as the Fischer’s lovebird, grey-breasted spurfowl, and the endemic grey-crested helmetshrike. The Seronera area, with its riverine forests, is particularly good for birdwatching.

Tarangire National Park

Known for its large elephant herds and iconic baobab trees, Tarangire is also a birdwatcher’s paradise with more than 550 species. The park’s swamps are a haven for water birds like the African jacana and the goliath heron. The dry season attracts large numbers of birds to the Tarangire River.

Arusha National Park

Encompassing diverse habitats from montane forests to alkaline lakes, Arusha National Park hosts over 400 bird species. Notable sightings include the Narina trogon and bar-tailed trogon in the forested areas, and flocks of flamingos on the Momella Lakes.

Ruaha National Park

As Tanzania’s largest national park, Ruaha offers over 570 bird species. The park’s remote location means fewer tourists and a more pristine environment

Birders can spot species like the ashy starling, Ruaha red-billed hornbill, and the yellow-collared lovebird.

Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park)

One of Africa’s largest faunal reserves, Selous is home to more than 440 bird species. The Rufiji River attracts species such as the African skimmer, white-fronted bee-eater, and the Pel’s fishing owl. Boat safaris offer unique birdwatching opportunities along the waterways.

Best Time for Birdwatching

The optimal time for birdwatching in Tanzania is during the wet season, from November to April. During this period, migratory birds from Europe and northern Africa are present, and many resident birds are in breeding plumage, making them more colorful and active.
